What is bouldering?

No ropes, no harnesses

  • Unlike traditional climbing, you don’t use a rope, harness or any gear in bouldering, as the routes are short enough that you can safely fall to the ground.
Shorter routes (“problems”)
  • The routes you climb are called problems. These problems range in difficulty and can involve unique moves and techniques to solve.
  • The difficulty of a problem is often graded – we use the V grade scale (from V0 for beginner problems to V11+ for elite problems).

Grading and difficulty

Boulder problems are graded based on their difficulty. We identify the difficulty of our problems with specifically-graded metal disks and coloured tags to signify the start of each problem, which correspond to a specific grade. But be careful, route setters are strange creatures who sometimes miss the mark!

Generally, V grades can be categorised as below:

  • V0–V3: Easy to moderate for beginners.
  • V4–V6: Intermediate.
  • V7 and above: Advanced to expert.
Focus on strength, technique, and problem-solving
  • Bouldering is less about endurance and more about strength and technical problem-solving.
  • Each problem might require a specific series of moves (like using small holds, dynamic movements, or precise foot placements).

What equipment do I need?

Bouldering is a fun and accessible form of climbing that doesn’t require a lot of specialised equipment, but there are a few key things you’ll need to get started. (Don’t worry – if you don’t have any of the below, we can help provide you with what you’ll need!

Climbing shoes
  • Why: Climbing shoes help you stick to the wall with precision. They should fit snugly (but not painfully tight), allowing you to place your weight on small footholds.
  • Not ready to buy? You can rent a pair of shoes during your visit, just ask at Reception!
Chalk bag
  • Why: Chalk is used to keep your hands dry and prevent slipping, especially on hot or sweaty days. It’s essential for better grip on the walls.
  • Don’t have one? You can rent a chalk bag with chalk or buy your own at Reception.

Benefits of Bouldering

  • Full-body Workout: While you might think it’s all about arm strength, bouldering actually works your core, legs, and fingers too.
  • Mental Challenge: The “problem-solving” aspect is huge. You have to figure out the best sequence of moves to get from the ground to the top, often requiring creativity and strategy.
  • Accessibility: No ropes or technical gear (other than climbing shoes) are needed, making it easier to start compared to other forms of climbing.
  • Social: It’s often done in a gym setting or with a group of climbers outdoors, so it can be a fun, social activity.
  • Not climbing? Get your workout in the full-service gym space or yoga studio. Get your work done in the café or relax in the beer garden (upstairs)!
